quinceanera mass

Among several Spanish-speaking countries and among many Hispanics in the United States there is the custom of celebrating the passage from childhood to adolescence with a ritual that expresses thanksgiving to God for the gift of life and that asks for a blessing from God for the years ahead. The Quinceañera, though not a sacrament is sacramental and therefore, can be celebrated in different forms depending on the family’s needs and its participation in the life of the parish.

Remember: the Act of Thanksgiving and the Blessing given are the key elements in the Quinceañera. The ceremony should be very memorable for those involved, especially the teen, family and close friends.

A family is considered active in the life of faith of the Church if:

  • regular attendance at Mass
  • regular attendance of religious education classes.
  • family registered in the parish
  • the Quinceañera needs to be involved in the youth program

The Quinceañera must have ALL the following done before the date of the celebration:

  • the Quinceañera must have received the sacrament’s of Baptism and First Communion (a copy of the certificate must be submitted if not done at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
  • must receive the Rite of Reconciliation (confession)

If the Quinceañera is lacking in any of these requirements, there will be no celebration.

For more information regarding celebrating a Quinceañera at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church please contact the office: (661) 323-3148

Sacred Scripture begins with the creation and union of man and woman and ends with “the wedding feast of the Lamb” (Rev 19:7, 9). Scripture often refers to marriage, its origin and purpose, the meaning God gave to it, and its renewal in the covenant made by Jesus with his Church.

Filipino Wedding RingsGod created man and woman out of love and commanded them to imitate his love in their relations with each other. Man and woman were created for each other. “It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him. . . . The two of them become one body” (Gn 2:18; 24). Woman and man are equal in human dignity, and in marriage both are united in an unbreakable bond.

Because Christian marriage is a sacrament, the Catholic Church wants couples to be well-prepared. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church offers marriage preparation to help couples develop a better understanding of the sacrament; to evaluate and deepen their readiness to live married life; and to gain insights into themselves as individuals and as a couple. The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract. Covenant always expresses a relationship between persons. The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God.

For couples planning to marry at Our lady of Guadalupe Church please contact the office 6 months before your anticipated wedding date to begin the marriage preparation process: 661-323-3148.

Pope Francis’ advice about weddings:

“Make [your wedding]a real celebration – because marriage is a celebration – a Christian celebration, not a worldly feast! … What happened in Cana 2,000 years ago, happens today at every wedding celebration: that which makes your wedding full and profoundly true will be the presence of the Lord who reveals himself and gives his grace. It is his presence that offers the ‘good wine’, he is the secret to full joy, that which truly warms the heart. “It is good that your wedding be simple and make what is truly important stand out. Some are more concerned with the exterior details, with the banquet, the photographs, the clothes, the flowers…These are important for a celebration, but only if they point to the real reason for your joy: the Lord’s blessing on your love.” –
